What is a roll-off dumpster?

A roll-off dumpster is a large, rectangular waste container that "rolls off" the back of a specialized delivery truck. Unlike permanent commercial dumpsters behind businesses or apartment complexes that are serviced by a weekly trash service, roll-offs are temporary containers with set rental periods designed for construction sites, driveways, and residential properties. They have an open top (sometimes called "open top dumpsters") for easy loading and all sizes include a rear door that swings open for walk-in access.

How A Roll-Off Dumpster Rental Works

We make renting a roll-off dumpster simple:

  1. Choose your size.  We have a variety of sizes to choose from, but sizes vary by location.  Check your service area page to see what sizes are available for you.  The most commonly rented and available sizes in most areas are the 12 yard, 20 yard and 30 yard dumpsters - see below.  Visit our page on how to calculate a cubic yard to easily estimate the size you'll need for your project.
  2. Book online or call us to schedule your delivery. If you aren't sure what size you need, our expert team can help you.
  3. We deliver the dumpster to your property and place it where you want it. In most areas, we offer next-day delivery. But in many cities we do offer same-day dumpsters!
  4. Load at your own pace during your rental period. Most areas include 7-14 days, depending on location. Need more time? Just let us know—extensions are available for a small daily fee.
  5. We pick it up when you're done. We will pick up the dumpster automatically at the end of your rental period. Or you can call, email, or use our live chat when your dumpster is full or your project is complete. We'll schedule pickup and handle all disposal.

Roll-off Dumpster Rental FAQs

How much does a roll-off dumpster cost?

Roll-off dumpster prices average from $395 to $875 in most areas.  But prices vary depending on location, size and type of material (mostly).  All dumpster costs are ultimately based on the weight of the material loaded into them.  So heavy material (like concrete, rock, brick, or dirt) will cost more for disposal.

How big of a roll-off do I need?

When it comes to roll-off dumpsters, we often tell customers "bigger is usually better".  Of course the size depends on the size of your project, and by the space you have for placement of the dumpster.  But many people think that you can rent a smaller size and save a signficant amount of money vs a larger size, and that is simply not true. Dumpster prices are mostly determined by the cost to run the trucks and local costs like fuel and landfill prices.  So the price difference between sizes is often minimal.  This is why we recommend to go with a large dumpster size most of the time.

  1. Larger sizes (like a 20 yard or 30 yard) are much more readily available in most areas.
  2. It's better to have more room and not need it than run out of space and have to rent another dumpster, or deal with the headache of disposing of the remaining debris yourself.

You can view pictures and dimensions of all sizes on our sizes page.

What is the difference between a roll-off and regular dumpster rental?

It depends on how you define "regular".  Most people that search for "dumpster rental" are looking for a roll-off dumpster, whether they know it or not. And most companies that advertises dumpster rental services are referring to roll-offs.   That is a temporary container that is rented for a short period of time, dropped off and picked up after its filled.  But there are also commercial dumpster rentals, which are the smaller 3 yard to 8 yard square dumpsters that sit behind businesses or apartment complexes.  Those are serviced and provided by local trash providers, typically large national companies.

Will a roll-off damage my driveway?

No, not in the vast majority of cases, but it is possible.  In our 15+ years in the roll-off industry, it's rare that we have seen damage to driveways.  However, sometimes the dumpster wheels can leave scratch marks, and on rare occassions, it can crack the driveway due to the weight of the dumpster and/or the truck.  The chances of this increase if you fill a roll-off full of dense, heavy material like brick, rock, dirt or concrete while it's sitting on a driveway.  Some homeowners put plywood down before delivery which can help minimize the possibility of scratches.

How do you load a roll-off?

All roll-off sizes have a door on one end that swings open (usually to the right) for walk-in loading.  Visit our pages on how to open a dumpster door to see how easy it is!  For smaller sizes that aren't as tall like the 10 yard, 12 yard or 20 yard, many people just throw their junk in over the side.  But for the larger sizes like the 30 yard and 40 yard, you'll have to use the door.  You should always load heavier items on the bottom, and even out the weight so it's evenly distributed and not all in one end of the dumpster.  Make sure you don't overfill the dumpster and keep all debris flat and level with the top so that it can be safely hauled away.

Do I need a permit for a roll-off dumpster?

In most areas no, whether it's on your property or the street.  A few cities will require a permit if you want to place the dumpster on the street, or on certain streets (like in busy areas like downtown). Permit requirements and costs vary by location. If you have to place your dumpster on the street, just check with us first.  Many times we can handle the permit for you included in the rental, but in some cities you have to arrange it with the city yourself. We can let you know if this applies in your area.
