Below are the most common dumpster rental sizes we offer. Remember: actual measurements can vary slightly by manufacturer and service area, but the cubic yard capacity is accurate, regardless of the dimensions. The 10 yard dumpster is perfect for very small projects like attic cleanouts, yard debris, or removing a few heavy items. It’s compact and easy to place, making it a great option when space is limited. Remember - dimensions, especially for a 10 yard, can vary by area. See your service area for specifics.
Dimensions: 11 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 3.5 ft. high
Capacity: 10 cubic yards (about 4 pickup truck loads)
The 12 yard dumpster is a common and popular choice for small projects and tight spaces. It’s compact, easy to place, and commonly used for garage cleanouts, small renovation jobs, or disposing of concrete and roofing materials. If you're short on space, this is a smart option.
Dimensions: 16 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 3.5 ft. high
Capacity: 12 cubic yards (about 6 pickup truck loads)
The 15 yard dumpster works well for mid-size projects like small kitchen remodels, flooring jobs, or getting rid of smaller bulky furniture. It provides more room than a 10 or 12 yard without taking up much more space.
Dimensions: 16 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 4 ft. high
Capacity: 15 cubic yards (about 6-7 pickup truck loads)
The 20 yard dumpster is one of our most common and widely available sizes. It’s large enough to handle roofing jobs, garage cleanouts, deck removals, and mid-size remodels—yet it still fits in most driveways. Customers love the low sides for easy loading.
Dimensions: 22 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 3.5-4 ft. high
Capacity: 20 cubic yards (about 8–10 pickup truck loads)
A 30 yard dumpster is ideal for large cleanouts, home renovations, and commercial jobs. It holds a substantial amount of debris and is one of the best values due to its widespread availability. It also comes with a higher weight allowance to help manage cost.
Dimensions: 22 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 6 ft. high
Capacity: 30 cubic yards (about 12–14 pickup truck loads)
The 40 yard dumpster is the largest size we offer and is designed for serious hauling—think major construction, home demolition, or commercial renovation. It’s the same length as a 30 yard but has taller sides and a generous weight allowance.
Dimensions: 22 ft. long × 8 ft. wide × 8 ft. high
Capacity: 40 cubic yards (about 16 pickup truck loads)
Remember: Dumpster dimensions can vary depending on the dumpster style and service area. All sizes listed above are the most common standard measurements, but check your local service area page for more precise details.
Not all dumpsters of the same size look exactly alike. Dimensions can vary depending on how the dumpster is built or which type of truck is used to haul it. While the cubic yard capacity stays the same, the length, height, or shape may differ slightly from one area to another.
There are two common reasons for these differences:
Different manufacturing styles:
Some dumpsters have a square-bottom, box-like shape, while others use a tapered design with angled sides—what we call a “bathtub-style can.” Bathtub-style dumpsters are often more structurally durable, which is why they’re increasingly common.
Service area truck requirements:
In some cities, we use shorter roll-off trucks to navigate tighter neighborhoods or hills. This means the dumpsters themselves need to be shorter in length, which can make them a little taller than standard models.
No matter the variation, each dumpster holds the correct amount in cubic yards. The dimensions shown on this page are representative but may vary by service area.
All roll off dumpsters are capable of hauling extremely heavy loads—any size can hold over well over 10 tons. However, it’s not safe (or legal) in most areas to transport dumpsters weighing more than about 10 tons total.
To keep things simple, most rental companies—including Trash Daddy—use a flat-rate pricing model that includes a weight allowance for each size. That’s often referred to as the “weight limit,” but it really just means how much weight is included in the base price.
If you exceed the included weight, you simply pay a per-ton overage fee (pro-rated). For help estimating your project weight, check out our materials weight guide.
Here are the most common weight allowances by dumpster size:
A couple of things to keep in mind:
(1) These are the most common weight limits we include in our flat-rate pricing at Trash Daddy across nearly every service area. Most projects fall well under these limits, which means usually you’ll pay exactly the price you were quoted—no surprises.
(2) In a few areas (like Las Vegas and others), we include even more weight. Be sure to check your local service area page for details specific to your location.
Don't let this happen to you!
Many people assume that renting a smaller dumpster will save money—but that’s not always the case. Smaller sizes typically have lower weight allowances, hold far less debris, and are not priced much cheaper than larger sizes.
Most customers find they end up with more junk than expected, and smaller dumpsters are easier to overfill. That’s a problem because dumpsters can’t be hauled if debris is sticking out over the top. Overloaded cans may require expensive extra trips or reloading.
Larger dumpsters (like 20s, 30s, and 40s) offer better value, better weight capacity, and much more flexibility—which is why they’re the most popular sizes we rent.
If you need to dispose of dense materials like concrete, rock, brick, or roofing shingles, ask us about a Heavy Can option. This is a special type of rental with a higher weight allowance—designed specifically for heavy debris, and to help keep your total costs down!
Heavy Cans are most commonly available in 10 yard, 12 yard, and 15 yard sizes, since larger dumpsters become too heavy to safely haul when filled with dense material. While the flat rate is a bit higher, it includes a much larger weight limit—saving you money on overage fees.
* Heavy Cans are not available in all areas. Contact us to check availability in your location.
The most common roll-off dumpster sizes are 12 yard, 20 yard, 30 yard, and 40 yard. Each size has standard dimensions in feet and a cubic yard capacity which is how much debris it can hold. There are other sizes available in some areas like a 10 yard or 15 yard, but those sizes are not as common. See your service area for sizes available in that area.
The 20 yard dumpster is the most popular size for residential projects. It typically fits in a standard driveway and holds about 8–10 pickup truck loads, making it ideal for remodels, roofing, and large cleanouts, or almost any other project.
A 15 yard dumpster usually measures about 16 feet long × 8 feet wide × 4 feet high. It can hold around 6 pickup truck loads of debris, which makes it useful for medium-size cleanouts and small remodels. Check out our 15 yard dumpster page to see some pictures of some typical 15 yard dumpsters.
A 20 yard dumpster is usually about 22 feet long × 8 feet wide × 4 feet high and holds about 8–10 pickup truck loads. It’s large enough for most home projects but still easy to place in most driveways. In some areas, we also have some 20 yarders that are shorter but taller, often called a "high-side 20". They are designed to fit in shorter driveways, but they are not available in every area. Check out our 20 yard dumpster page to see some pictures of some typical 20 yard dumpsters.
