Step 1: Decide What You’re Throwing Away

Before you rent a dumpster, think about what’s going inside. The type of material matters because it helps determine the right dumpster size and price.

  • Household junk: furniture, boxes, toys, clothing.
  • Remodel debris: wood, drywall, flooring, cabinets.
  • Heavy materials: concrete, dirt, shingles, brick.

Keep in mind that certain items can’t go in a dumpster, like paint, chemicals, appliances with freon, or hazardous waste.

Tip: If you’re unsure, call us. We’ll let you know what’s allowed and help you choose the best fit in just a few minutes.

Step 2 – Estimate How Much You Need to Toss

The amount of debris you have will determine the right dumpster size. You don’t need to measure everything perfectly — just get a rough idea of how much junk, remodel debris, or material you’ll be throwing away.

  • Smaller projects → a compact dumpster for garage cleanouts, yard debris, or small remodels.
  • Bigger projects → a larger dumpster for home cleanouts, roofing, or major renovations.

Tip: When in doubt, go one size bigger.  The cost difference to get a larger size is minimal, and many first-time renters underestimate how much space they’ll need.  It’s better to have the extra space (and extra weight included in the price) and not need it, than to have to rent another dumpster.

To help you estimate how many cubic yards of debris you have, visit our page on how to calculate a cubic yard.  We walk you through how to estimate the size of the dumpster you will need for your project.

Step 3 – Get a Quote and Schedule Delivery

Once you know what you’re throwing away and roughly how much, the next step is simple — get a quote and schedule your dumpster delivery.

  • Call us or book online in just a couple of minutes.
  • Delivery is fast — most often next-day, but in many areas we can also deliver same-day as well.
  • Our team will confirm the size, price, and rental period so there are no surprises.

Tip: You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. If you’re unsure about size, placement, or timing, just tell us about your project and we’ll walk you through the best option.

You fill it, we pick it up. All delivery, pickup, and disposal are included for one flat rate.

Step 4 – Prepare for Delivery

Before your dumpster arrives, make sure the drop-off spot is ready. A little preparation ensures a smooth delivery and avoids delays.

  • Clear space: Driveways are the most common spot. Move cars or obstacles so the driver has room. If access is blocked, it can result in a dry run fee.
  • Provide clearance: The truck needs space to maneuver safely. Allow at least 60 feet in length, 12 feet in width, and 60 feet of vertical clearance (no low power lines or tree branches).
  • Optional - protect your surface: Our drivers are experienced and careful, but if you’re concerned, you can place plywood where the dumpster will sit for extra protection.

Step 5 – Fill the Dumpster

Once your dumpster is delivered, you’re ready to start loading it up. A few simple best practices will save you time and avoid extra charges:

  • Load heavy items first: Place things like appliances, bulky items, or large furniture at the bottom.
  • Distribute weight evenly: Keep the load balanced for safe hauling.
  • Don’t overfill: Material should stay level with the top edge of the dumpster — nothing sticking out over the sides.
  • Break items down when possible: Flatten boxes or cut lumber to fit more efficiently.

Tip: If you think you’ll need more time or might fill the dumpster quicker than expected, let us know. Extensions or swap-outs are easy to arrange.

Common Questions About Renting a Dumpster

How long can I keep the dumpster?

Most rentals with Trash Daddy include 14 days, but this varies by area.  Check your service area for details.

Do I need to be there when the dumpster is delivered?

No. As long as the drop-off spot is clear and accessible, our driver will place it according the placement instructions.

What if I fill the dumpster faster than I expected?

Just give us a call. We can pick it up early or swap it for another dumpster (swaps are the same price).

Are there extra fees I should know about?

Your flat rate includes delivery, pickup, and disposal. The only way you will pay more is if the dumpster weighs more than the weight limit included in the price, which usually doesn't happen.

Can I put anything in the dumpster?

Most household junk, remodel debris, and yard waste are fine. Items like paint, chemicals, and appliances with freon aren’t allowed. Check our prohibited items page, or call us if you’re unsure.
