Can you rent a dumpster for yard waste?

YES!  A roll off dumpster rental is an affordable and convenient way to get rid of yard waste or any other debris or old junk you have lying around your yard, home or garage.

For a small amount of debris, like a couple of bags of grass clippings, that stuff can be set out for your weekly trash service.  But, if it's more than that, like tree branches, dirt, gravel, rock or other larger items, you need another solution.  Residential trash services stopped taking larger items in most areas years ago.

If you ever wondered "can you rent a dumpster for yard waste", this article is for you! A roll off dumpster rental is the perfect choice for yard waste disposal or any landscaping project.

What can go in a yard waste dumpster rental?

You can use a dumpster rental to get rid of almost anything.  If you are renting the dumpster specifically for yard waste and landscaping debris, below are some of the most common items you would throw in one.

  • Tree branches - any branches or stumps must be no longer than about 2 feet and no larger than about 10 inches in diameter.  Anything larger must be cut up into smaller pieces before being thrown in a dumpster.
  • Bushes
  • Grass clippings, weeds, plants, or any other yard debris
  • Gravel, dirt, rock, brick or concrete - when loading heavy material of this type, check with the dumpster rental company to see if they accept heavy material.  Most of them do, but some won't.  Even if they do, a good rule of thumb is to only fill a dumpster about half full with rock, brick, concrete or dirt.  This will help keep your total cost down.  But most importantly, it will help to ensure the dumpster will not be too heavy for the truck to pick up.  That will prevent any dry run fees and a lot of work on your part if you have to offload any material after you have already loaded it.
  • Metal or plastic landscape edging material

Of course you can throw many other things in a dumpster too.  If you rent a dumpster to clean up your yard, you can also get rid of other junk around your house or garage.  Some popular uses for a dumpster rental are removal of:  appliances, furniture, mattresses, box springs, old clothes, metal, wood, and more.

NOTE: you CAN mix the debris in a roll off dumpster.  For example, if you rent a dumpster for cleaning your yard, you can add other things all together.  It doesn't have to be just one type of material.

What CANNOT go in a yard waste dumpster rental?

There are very few items that you cannot put in a dumpster.  But there isn't really anything related specifically to yard waste.  The only thing in that category would be contaminated soil.  That would be considered a hazardous material and has specific disposal requirements.

Below are the most common items that CANNOT go in a dumpster:

  • refrigerators or air conditioners (becasue of the Freon)
  • electronics (TVs, computers, etc.)
  • tires; wheels and rims are fine, but NOT the tires
  • liquid cleaners or paint (anything flammable or toxic)
  • car batteries
  • fluorescent bulbs

These are just some of the items not allowed.  See a complete list on our prohibited items page.

What is the best dumpster size for yard waste removal?

The answer to the question "can you rent a dumpster for yard waste" is YES. But what size? This can vary some by area.  But generally the smaller sizes are best for yard waste.  The best sizes would be the 10 cubic yard dumpster, the 12 yard, the 15 yard, up to the 20 yard.  The smaller sizes are better mainly because some of the material in your yard can be heavy (rock, gravel, dirt).  If you fill a larger size, like a 30 yard or 40 yard, with heavy items it could be difficult for the truck to pick up.

Check with your local hauler (in our service area hopefully that's Trash Daddy!😎) when disposing of this type of material.  Some will only have certain sizes for this type of use, and some won't care what size you select.  In our service areas at Trash Daddy, you can choose any of the sizes below (assuming they are available in that area).

10 yard dumpster

10 yard dumpster dimensions

This size is the smallest we offer in any area.  It is approximately 11 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3.5-4 feet tall.

The 15 yard is popular, but there are not many available in most areas.  The 15 yard is approximately 16 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4-4.5 feet tall.

20 yard dumpster

The 20 yard is one of most popular sizes, and it's available almost everywhere.  The 20 yard is approximately 22 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3.5-4 feet tall.
