Yes! A 20 yard dumpster will fit in most residential driveways. Most 20 yard dumpsters are 22 feet long, or less, and this is less than the average residential driveway length. This is one reason why the 20 yard is the most popular dumpster rental size. But, there are many other reasons why the 20 yard is so popular. We will explain:

A 20 yard dumpster is not as tall as other sizes

The typical 20 yard dumpster dimensions are 22 feet long by 8 feet wide by 3.5 to 4 feet tall. Occasionally you could see a 20 yard that is not as long and taller, but these are the most common dimensions. The fact that a 20 yard is not as tall as other sizes makes this size extremely popular.

The reason for this is the shorter height makes it easy to throw trash in over the edge. The larger sizes often require customers to use the door on the end. When you rent a 20 yard dumpster you often don't need to use the door.

The 20 yard has a high weight capacity

Being 22 feet long, a 20 yard can handle large and heavy loads of junk and trash. It has a higher weight limit than the smaller sizes and can hold about 8-10 pickup truck loads of material. This includes large items like appliances and furniture.

The 20 yard is also often used for heavy material like shingles, brick or concrete. It is capable of carrying more than 10 tons. But, if you put heavy material in a 20 yard you must be very careful not to fill the dumpster more than half full, or it could be too heavy for the truck to lift.

20 yard dumpsters are readily available and affordable in any area

Because the 20 yard is the most commonly rented size, most haulers have more of this size than any other in their inventory. That means that the 20 yard is normally available to rent and very affordable in any area. In fact, most of the time you can rent a 20 yard for only slightly more than the smaller sizes, because there are more of them. This makes the 20 yard a better choice than the smaller 10 yard, 12 yard or 15 yard most of the time.

How to Measure Your Driveway To Be Sure The 20-Yard Will Fit

While the dumpster itself is roughly 22 feet long, you need to account for the total footprint of the rental. To ensure a smooth delivery, check these three things with a tape measure:

  • The Door Swing: Most 20-yard dumpsters have a rear door that swings open like a gate. You need about 8 feet of clear space behind the dumpster (or 30 feet total length) to fully open that door. If you place the dumpster too close to your garage or a fence, you'll be stuck lifting heavy items over the 4-foot sidewall.
  • The "Truck Gap": The roll-off truck needs to pull forward to "drop" the bin. Ensure you have at least 10–15 feet of space in front of where you want the dumpster to sit so the truck can maneuver.

Will a 20 yard dumpster fit in a driveway?

Yes, it will, most of the time. Just remember that most 20 yard dumpsters are about 22 feet long. Most driveways are longer than that, and you'll want to allow 6 inches or more of extra space. At Trash Daddy, we place 20 yard dumpsters in driveways all the time (and the 30 yards and 40 yards too).
